Welcome to our second newsletter. Since the last publication the Group have become a registered charity. This gives a big advantage when seeking funding for some of the projects undertaken by the Group on behalf of the village.
The Flamborough Community Environmental Action Group was formed in 2000 and has the following aims:
- To assist in the promotion, enhancement, improvement and conservation of the area of Flamborough, through projects of environmental improvement or heritage conservation.
- To advance the education of people resident in Flamborough through the provision of training courses relating to the heritage and preservation of the area of Flamborough.
- To promote, organise, carry on and encourage the education of children and young people in natural conservation history and all subjects concerning the environment.
- To advance the education of the general public in the history and heritage of Flamborough.
ACHIEVEMENTS
The Young Roots Group The Young Roots Group for teenagers came into being in September 2001 and this project is almost complete. The end result will be the publishing of a book on many aspects of village life as related and taped by the youngsters and is to be circulated to every household in the village. The bridge at South Landing, designed by the group, commemorates the maritime history of Flamborough and in a number of ways has received both compliments and criticism, dependant on the eye of the beholder. It must be said though, the dedication of the young people involved has been remarkable in the way they have shown the determination to complete the task. The group have also created and placed sculptures around the South Landing nature trail. These have received more favourable comments and are well worth a visit as they provide something for everyone. The launching of the sculpture trail will take place on Tue 27th May 2003 at 1.00pm, when Mr. Robert Emmerson will officially open it at 2.00pm.
Whitbread Action Earth Whitbread have been responsible for funding various projects undertaken by the Group, and again this year are sponsoring eight projects planned for the autumn and early spring. Some of the projects already completed have been: bulb planting around the village, wild flower and seed planting on the verges near Millennium Wood. More recently Whitbread part funded the project to renovate the black and white finger post road signs around the village. This involved removing the old paint from the posts and signboards before re-painting. Any damaged boards and lettering were repaired or replaced by E.R.Y.C. The completed work is very noticeable for everyone to see.
www.flamboroughuk.net Website The website has now been compiled, set up and is live on the Internet, the address is http://www.flamboroughuk.net. The aim of site is to display local information, history and events. It also aimed at providing a one-stop-shop for anyone wishing to visit. There is still room for growth and contributions are welcome. The Group would like to encourage local businesses and community groups to put their details on the site, which is fundamentally free. Small donations towards the running costs would be welcome but are not obligatory. The website co-ordinator is Geoff Balderson Tel: (01262) 851128
Tree Sparrows The Groups attention was drawn to the depleting numbers of tree sparrows, it was agreed to apply for a grant to provide nesting boxes for the birds. A sub-group from the membership was formed and worked in conjunction with the Flamborough Ornithological Group to erect them. To date some forty boxes are in place.
Planting Troughs So far three have been planted up, two are in place to the frontage of Preston Flats at North End. Another has been placed at the junction of Woodcock Road and North Marine Road with all the plants for this being donated by Flamborough Florists, which was much appreciated. The Group have purchased another two planters from Major Joinery, which it hopes to plant up by summer and put one near the old peoples bungalows on Ogle Road and one at North End junction.
FUTURE PROJECTS
As you will now have seen the Group has been working hard to help enhance and preserve the village and it's history. It is hoped to put the following ideas into action in the near future, but this is very much dependent on the group acquiring the necessary funding and various other negotiations.
Sensory Garden The Group had hoped to provide a sensory garden but to date have been unable to find a suitable site. This has affected the ability to procure funding and therefore detailed planning has been put on hold for the time being.
Danes Dyke The Group have been asked to help with an archaeological survey of Danes Dyke. The survey is to cover a period from 8000 years ago until present day. We Need Your Help - if you have any information or photographs relating to Danes Dyke or Danes Dyke house, especially during World War II and up to the 1950's, when the house was demolished. If you feel you can help in anyway please either contact the Group at the address below or e-mail us at fceag@flamboroughuk.net. Any photographs loaned will be copied and returned to you usually within 2 hours.
Local Environmental Matters The Group as an environmental group does try to keep a watchful eye on such matters as hedgerows, the countryside, wildlife and the environmental regulations, which are there to try and preserve much of the village heritage.
All projects undertaken are funded independently and no cost is passed onto the village.
FCEAG hopes you have been inspired by the above ideas and that you will come along to its meetings. These are held on the first Wednesday of every month upstairs at the Ship Inn at 7.30pm. For further details, contact FCEAG c/o Sharon Mummery, 1, Woodcock Road, Flamborough (01262) 851417. E-mail fceag@flamboroughuk.
