Path Sign Post

  1. The Coastal paths can become wet, muddy and slippery after bad weather and especially during winter months. Some of the more remote paths can also become overgrown. Always wear suitable footwear.
  2. Some parts of the cliff are prone to erosion, always keep as far back from the edge as practicable and keep a sharp look out for any notices. Dogs and children can get excited and may not fully appreciate the dangers.
  3. Under no circumstances attempt to climb up, or down the cliffs. The chalk and clay on top are insecure at the best of times. In some places the clay actually overhangs the edge and is not always visible.
  4. Only use access points to the beaches and coves that are signposted. Stick to the designated paths as they usually provide the safest route.
  5. Always try to find out what the tide is doing and be don't be tempted to walk between the inlets along the beach. The tide comes in quickly and may cut you off before you know it.
  6. Be extremely careful when exploring caves. In some cases the tide actually comes in from behind. Children should always be accompanied by an adult, some caves lead to the sea.
  7. The rocks are very slippery, especially when wet or covered in any weed. Some of the rocks and ledges (know locally as scars) are razor sharp. Please take care when walking on them.
  8. Make sure that everyone is aware of the dangers and always know where your children are. The risk of becoming cut off by the tide is ever present.
  9. If the unthinkable does happen, remain calm and dial 999 and ask for the coastguard. Acting sooner rather than later can stop the situation from getting any worse.

The local Lifeboat Crew and Coastguard can tell all too many stories about people who have not followed these guidelines. Enjoy yourself by all means but above all PLEASE TAKE CARE.
