Flamborough's partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution began in 1871 after the '10th of February Gale'. Many ships and lives were lost on this day in Bridlington Bay after becoming caught by a South Easterly storm. The fishermen of Flamborough, after watching helplessly for some time could watch no more. They carried a fishing coble from South Landing some 1½ miles along the beach and launched to aid a brig named 'Arrow'. This action saved the life of one the crew before the vessel was lost. In November of 1871 Flamborough received two new lifeboats. One at North Landing and one at South Landing. The idea being at least one boat could be launched into the lee of a gale. The two stations functioned successfully until 1938 when motor lifeboats were introduced. This led to the closure of the South Landing station. The North Landing station continued until 1993 when the all weather Oakley lifeboat 'Will and Fanny Kirby' was replaced by an Atlantic 75 lifeboat called 'B-703 Jason Logg'. Flamborough has recently recieved the latest Atlantic 85 lifeboat 'B-820 Elizabeth Jane Palmer'. This is based at the rebuilt South Landing Station. It is an Atlantic 85 class lifeboat equipped with twin 115 horse power outboard engines, carries a crew of 4, travels at over 35 knots and can be at an incident in a matter of minutes. Last Service: 4th February 2008 |
